Consumption of hard coal decreased by 14 per cent from January to June

Approximately 2.6 million tonnes (67,000 TJ) of hard coal was consumed as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat in the first half of 2007. The consumption fell by 14 per cent from the pervious year and stood at 6 per cent below the average level of the 2000s. Use of hard coal decreased both in combined heat and power production and in separate production of electricity. The low price of emission allowances improved the competitiveness of hard coal in electricity and heat production when compared with other types of production with lower emission levels.
