Inflation 1.2 per cent in September

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.2 per cent in September. In August it stood at 1.0 per cent. The slight acceleration of inflation was mainly caused by increases in the prices of liquid fuels.

Risen prices of fuel put consumer prices up most, or by 0.9 percentage points, in the year. Restaurant and hotel prices, and rents also went up from the year before. Likewise, inflation was pushed up by increases in the prices of cultural and leisure services, dwellings and housing services. The rise in consumer prices was curbed most by lower telephone charges and reductions in the prices of vegetables, entertainment electronics, home PCs and passenger cars. Interest rates also fell from September 2004.

From August to September, consumer prices went up by 0.6 per cent, largely because the prices of liquid fuels went up and clothing sales finished.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 492 commodities from 3,000 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
