In the second quarter of 2007, general government total net financial assets grew by EUR 9.7 billion, rising to a total of EUR 127.7 billion. Social security funds contributed EUR 3.2 billion, local government EUR 0.7 billion and central government EUR 5.7 billion to the total growth. The strong growth in the net financial assets came from favourable development in the prices of central government's and social security funds' investments in equity and mutual funds and from an EUR 4.6 billion increase in the stock of central government deposits. General government debt also grew slightly in the second quarter. Central government bonds increased by EUR 2.6 billion and money market instruments decreased by EUR 1.5 billion.
The market value of the shares held by employment pension schemes was EUR 58.5 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2007. Thanks to favourable share price development the value was up by EUR 3.8 billion on the previous quarter. During the reviewed period, employment pension schemes increased their investments in mutual funds by EUR 1.8.
The data on the investments of employment pension schemes in sharers and mutual funds have been corrected for the first quarter due to an error that was discovered in the source data. In comparison to the data released in July, these investments grew by EUR 5.8 billion.
