Total energy consumption decreased by 8 per cent in the early part of the year

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 650 petajoule in the January to June period of 2009, which was 8 per cent less than in the corresponding period of the year before. Consumption of electricity in the early part of the year totalled 41 TWh, which was 10 per cent less than in the year before. The economic downturn reduced especially industry's electricity consumption. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy decreased by 4 per cent.

Total energy consumption, petajoule (1 petajoule = 1,000 terajoule)

Worsened water situation from the year before reduced the production of hydro power by 16 per cent. As the prices of emission rights remained considerably below the previous year's level, more coal was used in the production of condensate power and the consumption of coal (includes here coal, coke, and blast furnace and coke oven gas) went up by 17 per cent. The production of wind power showed 5 per cent growth. In the early part of the year, consumption of peat diminished by 24 per cent, consumption of wood-based fuels by 20 per cent and consumption of natural gas by 12 per cent from the previous year. Net imports of electricity decreased by 32 per cent especially due to increased electricity exports. Finland was a net seller on the Nordic electricity market in the early part of the year.

The prices of motor gasoline, and light and heavy fuel oils went up towards the end of the examined period but nevertheless remained clearly below the level where they were in the early part of last year. The price of diesel fuel stayed at the same level as in late 2008. The price of natural gas was falling and sunk in the second quarter below the level where it was in the previous year's respective time period. Throughout the early part of the year the price of electricity was falling in the Nordic electricity exchange Nord Pool and the price level stayed clearly below the previous year's level.
