Total energy consumption diminished by 5.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2009

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 370 petajoule in the January to March period of 2009, which was 5.8 per cent less than in the corresponding period of the year before. Colder weather than in the previous year increased the need for heating energy, but the steep drop of industrial output in the early part of the year put total consumption into a clear decline. The consumption of wood-based fuels diminished by 15 per cent, the use of peat by 17 per cent and that of natural gas by 7 per cent.

Total energy consumption, petajoule (1 petajoule = 1,000 terajoule)

Consumption of electricity totalled 23 terawatt hours (TWh), i.e. 7.4 per cent less than in the year before. Due to the economic downturn electricity consumption diminished by 17 per cent in industry but remained otherwise on level with the previous year. Because of the worsened water situation in Norway and Sweden electricity imports diminished from the Nordic countries. Net imports of electricity almost halved and Finland was a net seller on the Nordic electricity market. The diminished imports were compensated for by increasing the production of separate condensate power with coal.

The increased use of coal put carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy up by 4 per cent from the previous year. Very little coal condensate power was used one year previously because of the good water situation in the Nordic countries. In the first quarter of this year coal consumption equalled the average for the 2000s.

In the first quarter of 2009 the prices of transport fuels were clearly lower that in the same quarter of the previous year. However, the prices of these fuels which began to fall towards the end of last summer started to go up again in the course of this spring. The market price of electricity and the prices of emission rights continued to fall. From December to March the market price of electricity has fallen by over 20 per cent but is still nearly 10 per cent higher than one year ago. The price of coal continued the fall that had started in late 2008, and was in March on level with the previous year.
