The statistics on subject choices of students contain data on subject choices in comprehensive and upper secondary general schools.

Data content

Statistics on the subject choices at comprehensive schools contain data on subject choices (ethical subjects, languages) of comprehensive school pupils.

Statistics on the subject choices at upper secondary general schools include data on subject choices (ethical subjects, languages, mathematics) of those having concluded upper secondary general education (i.e. completed the entire upper secondary general school syllabus).

Classifications used

Statistics contain classifications describing types of educational institutions, various regional classifications and classifications of Statistics Finland and the Educational Administration, and international classifications of fields and levels of education.

Data collection methods and data sources

Statistics Finland collects the data for the statistics on subject choices of students through the Internet with web forms. Data for the statistics on subject choices at comprehensive schools are collected from all comprehensive schools in Finland in connection with the collection of data on comprehensive schools. Data for subject choices at upper secondary general schools are collected by separate data collection from all educational institutions providing upper secondary general education. Both sets of statistics on subject choices are based on total data.

Updating frequency

Statistics on subject choices at both comprehensive schools and upper secondary general schools are produced yearly.

Time of completion or release

Data on subject choices at comprehensive schools are completed in the following year's May and data on subject choices at upper secondary general schools in the same year's December.

Time series

Statistics Finland has been compiling statistic on the subject choices of students in comprehensive and upper secondary general schools since 1994. Examinations of the time series should make allowances for the changes that have taken place in the area covered by the topic.
