Description

Regional input-output statistics comprise regional supply and use tables and the input-output tables based on them. The data in the tables improve the precision and add depth to regional accounts data. They describe the structure of production in the regions, relationships between economic activities and the dependence of regions on the product flows in other regions and abroad.

The results of the regional input-output survey form an integral part of regional accounts. Product flows described according to a consistent and logical framework add to the content of regional accounts data and enhance their quality. Supply and use tables describe the supply of commodities generated by production and imports in a region and the use of these commodities in the production of other goods (intermediate consumption), consumption as final products, capital formation and exports. The symmetrical input-output tables describe interdependencies between economic activities. Analysis tables derived from them can be used to study the importance of the production and final use of economic activities to regional economy and employment.

Data content

Supply tables describe by product group the production of goods and services used by different industries in the economy of a region and their imports from other regions and abroad. Use tables describe by product group the use of goods as intermediate products by different industries, in the region’s own final use and in exports to other domestic regions and abroad. The description also shows the distribution by industry of expenditure on purchases of domestic and foreign products, wages and salaries, operating surplus and other value added items.

The input-output tables formed from the supply and use tables examine the use of outputs from industries as intermediate product inputs in different industries and in final use. The input-output tables depict the structure of production activity and interdependencies between industries.

The concepts and definitions used in the 2002 regional input-output survey and supply and use tables are based on the European System of Accounts (ESA95) and on the congruent UN System of National Accounts (Handbook of Input-Output Table Compilation and Analysis 1999).

Regional input-output surveys describe the structure of production activity and interdependencies between industries in a region. Basing on these interdependencies, input-output models are constructed which can be used to study structural changes in the national economy and assess the impacts from these changes on, for example, production, imports, inflation and employment. The data are public.

Classifications used

The industrial classification used in the 2002 supply and use tables and input-output tables is the classification of national accounts that is based on the national standard industrial classification TOL2002 while the product classification is the national accounts classification that is based on the European Union’s activity-based product classification (CPA). The published tables include 30 activity and product groups. The division into regions valid in 2002 is used as the regional classification.

Data collection methods and data sources

Regional input-output surveys are derived statistics. Most of the data used in their compilation are obtained from registers, other databases and data files of basic statistics. The most important sources are regional accounts, national accounts, especially their supply and use tables, statistics on industrial structures and products, structural statistics on service industries, statistics on foreign trade, Register of Enterprises and Establishments, corporate taxation records, statistical databases of central and local governments, statistics on agriculture and forestry and the Household Budget Survey. Unlike in the compilation of input-output data for the whole country, additional information on product flows between regions is required in the regional input-output survey.

Updating frequency

Irregular. Regional input-output surveys are completed as separate projects (for the time being).

Time of completion or release

Supply and use tables and regional input-output tables do not have regular completion or releases schedules.

Time series

Two regional input-output surveys have been made in Finland. The first one concerned the year 1995 and was completed in 2000. The data of the second regional input-output survey relate to the year 2002 and they were published in autumn 2006. The data from the two surveys are not directly comparable.
