Greenhouse gas emissions in 2010 nearly at the level prior to the economic downturn

In 2010, Finland's greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 74.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 eq.). They rose by a total of 8.5 million carbon dioxide tonnes from the year before, exceeding the commitment level of the Kyoto Protocol by around five per cent. The data are based on the preliminary estimate to be submitted by Statistics Finland to the European Commission on 15 January 2012 concerning emissions in 2010.

Material requirement on the increase in the wake of economic recession

Total material requirement in Finland's economy amounted to 537 million tonnes in 2010. This equals just over 100 million tonnes per capita. Total material requirement is the sum of domestic and foreign direct inputs and hidden flows. In 2010, total material requirement turned into sharp growth from the year before. Use of wood and minerals increased most, both by 25 per cent. By contrast, the used amount of plants decreased by 14 per cent, mainly due to diminished grain crop.

Finland's greenhouse gas emissions in 2009 nearly 7 per cent below the commitment level of the Kyoto Protocol

Greenhouse gas emissions in 2009 amounted to 66.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (t CO2 eq.). The economic downturn was reflected in the greenhouse gas emissions of 2009 in several sectors. Compared with the previous year, emissions decreased by 5.8 per cent. Emissions from energy use of manufacturing diminished most significantly (23%). These data derive from Finlands greenhouse gas inventory delivered by Statistics Finland to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 15 April 2011.

Recovery of sorted materials was the largest industry in the environmental goods and services sector in 2009

The total turnover of enterprises operating in the environmental goods and services sector was EUR 1.61 billion in 2009. The turnover fell by 30 per cent from the previous year while the number of personnel as well as investments continued to show growth. These data derive from the new statistics on environmental goods and services sector compiled by Statistics Finland. The statistics comprise data on enterprises operating in the environmental and services sector as their principal activity. Environmental business activity refers to activity related to production that is based on environmental pollution prevention or the saving of natural resources.

The Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the year 2008 reviewed

An international expert team has reviewed the data on greenhouse gas emissions reported by Finland in spring 2010. During the review, the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2008 was changed by 0.2 per cent. The revised emission amount corresponds to 70.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2 eq.), while the previous estimate was 70.1 million tonnes. Changes were made to emissions from agriculture and waste management. Emissions are still below the Kyoto Protocol target level of 71.0 million tonnes.

Emissions below the Kyoto Protocol target level

According to Statistics Finland, Finlands greenhouse gas emissions were 1.2 per cent below the Kyoto Protocol target level in 2008. Emissions amounted to 70.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2 eq.), or 10 per cent less than in the previous year. These data derive from the greenhouse gas inventory Finland submitted to the UNFCCC on 15 April. The trend in the emissions and factors affecting it, as well as the monitoring of the commitments under the Kyoto Protocol are described in detail in the recent Finnish-language publication Suomen kasvihuonekaasupäästöt vuosina 1990 - 2008 .

Public sector environmental protection expenditure peaked in 2006

Public sector environmental protection expenditure grew significantly in 2006 when compared with previous years. The expenditure grew by as much as 14 per cent from the year 2005. The growth in environmental protection expenditure was strongest in the local government sector, where especially investments in waste and sewage management increased. This year the volume of municipal expenditure on environmental protection exceeded the corresponding expenditure item of central government. Revenue from environmental protection also grew slightly, which counterbalanced the increase in public sector environmental protection expenditure.

Finnish-language summary of data on emissions in 2005

For the first time, Statistics Finland has compiled a Finnish-language summary report of greenhouse gas emissions in Finland over the 1990-2005 period. The reported data are based on the national inventory submitted annually to the UNFCCC. Besides the data on actual emissions the report also sheds light on the causes behind emission trends. In addition, the report contains an overview of future emission scenarios and emissions data reported by other countries.
