<title>The share of municipal tax in direct taxes has grown</title>

<description>In 2010 direct taxes and payments paid by income earners totalled EUR 25.3 billion, which was four per cent more than one year earlier. The amount of taxes on capital income grew most, by 33 per cent from the year before. In contrast, taxes paid on earned income went down by 4.6 per cent from the previous year. Municipal tax grew by 3.5 per cent and sickness insurance contributions by 23 per cent. Payments of municipal tax amounted to EUR 15.6 billion, taxes on earned income to EUR 5.1 billion and taxes on capital income to EUR 1.7 billion.</description>

<title>Number of low income earners stopped growing</title>

<description>There were 706,000 low income earners in Finland in 2010. The low income rate, or the proportion of low income earners in total population, was 13.3 per cent. From 2007 to 2010, the number of low income earners stayed at around 700,000 and the low income rate fluctuated between 13.1 and 13.5 per cent. Thus, the past few years have seen the end to the prolonged trend of growth that had continued since the mid-1990s.</description>

<title>Debts grew more than income in 2010</title>

<description>During a decade, household-dwelling units debts have gone up by clearly more than their income. In 2010, household-dwelling units with debt rate of indebtedness, i.e. ratio of debts to disposable income, was 156 per cent, having been 108 per cent in 2002. In 2009, the rate of indebtedness was 153 per cent. Outstanding debts of household-dwelling units with debt grew by 4.9 per cent and their disposable monetary income by 2.6 per cent in 2010. Except for the youngest ones, household-dwelling units rate of indebtedness rose from the previous year in all age groups.</description>

<title>Differences in wealth increased slightly by indebtedness</title>

<description>In 2009, the average gross wealth of households amounted to EUR 192,000 and net wealth was EUR 157,000 per household. In real terms, gross wealth had increased by one fifth (21%) from the time of the previous survey in 2004, while net wealth had increased by 14 per cent in this period. The trend of indebtedness has widened the difference between gross and net wealth in recent years. This is indicated by the Household Wealth Survey 2009 of Statistics Finland.</description>

<title>Income differentials began to grow in 2010</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland's Total statistics on income distribution, the contraction of income differentials that had lasted for a couple of years came to an end in 2010. In 2010, the value of the Gini coefficient describing income differentials was 28.2, which is 0.6 percentage points higher than twelve months earlier. In the lowest-earning income decile, income grew by 1.5 per cent in real terms while in the highest-earning decile income grew by nearly five per cent. In the top-earning percentage of the population, income went up by over 12 per cent. Income differentials grew especially due to increased sales profits and dividend income.</description>

According to Statistics Finland's income distribution statistics, the Gini coefficient was 25.9 in 2009, while one year previously it was 0.9 units higher. In all other income deciles income grew.</description>
