<title>Annual number of patents applied in Finland fell further in 2010</title>

<description>The number of patent applications made in Finland decreased by around one hundred from the previous year in 2010. The number went down for both domestic and foreign applicants. By contrast, the number of patents granted in Finland to domestic patentees, similarly as the number of European patents granted to Finnish enterprises and associations, remained on level with the previous year. The number of U.S. patents granted to Finnish enterprises and associations grew by one quarter to about 1,250 patents. These data derive from statistics on patenting in 2010 published by Statistics Finland.</description>

<title>Internet use outside home and work becoming more common</title>

<description>The Internet is a daily tool for increasingly more people. According to Statistics Finlands survey, as many as 89 per cent of those aged 16 to 74 use the Internet and three out of four use it daily. Forty-three per cent of persons entitled to vote used an election engine before the latest elections. Smartphones are purchased most by persons aged under 45 and men, on the other hand.</description>

<title>RD expenditure in the higher education sector up by 11 per cent</title>

<description>In 2010 around EUR 185 million more was used on research and development than one year previously. According to Statistics Finland, the majority of the growth, 77 per cent, was directed to the higher education sector. EUR 115 million of the EUR 142 million increase recorded for the higher education sector came from the growth in external funding. The change in research made with basic State funding thus remained minor.</description>

<title>Employment rate exceptionally high among those with tertiary level degrees</title>

<description>In 2008, 85 per cent of those with tertiary level degrees were employed, which is 14 percentage points higher than the employment rate of total population. The situation was best for those with doctorate level degrees, whose employment rate was over 90 per cent. The difference between the employment rate of women and men was small, only good one percentage point, while in total population it was three percentage points.</description>

<title>Government RD funding totals close on EUR 2.1 billion in 2011</title>

The proportion of funds allocated to RD activities of overall government spending exclusive of debt servicing is 4.3 per cent.</description>

<title>Sixty-eight per cent of enterprises have in use a mobile broadband connection</title>

<title>Downswing in business enterprises investments in RD</title>

<description>Business enterprises decreased their expenditure on research and development (RD) activities by good EUR 250 million from the previous year. Expenditure has never before gone down during the entire time period starting from 1971 over which Statistics Finland has compiled statistics on RD investments. RD expenditure decreased in several industries, but by most, or by around EUR 90 million, in the electronics industry. In 2009, business enterprises RD expenditure totalled EUR 4.85 billion.</description>

<title>Innovation activity still more common in manufacturing than in service enterprises</title>

The majority of these also introduced product or process innovations. Enterprises reported innovation expenditure to the tune of around EUR seven billion in 2008. The data derive from a survey of Statistics Finland concerning innovation activity among enterprises.</description>

<title>Seventy-six per cent of enterprises had their own website</title>

<description>Seventy-six per cent of enterprises had their own Internet website in spring 2009. A total of 97 per cent of large enterprises with at least 100 employees had a website while only 69 per cent of small companies employing 5 to 9 persons had one. Examined by industry, enterprises with websites of their own were most common in the sector of information and communications (99 per cent), and rarest in the industries of transportation and storage (51 per cent) and construction (58 per cent). More and more enterprises of all sizes have set up websites of their own. Since 2000, the number of sites has gone up by 29 percentage points. These data were collected with an inquiry in spring 2009 and they apply to enterprises with at least five employees.</description>

<title>Domestic and European patenting by enterprises on the increase</title>

<description>Domestic patenting by enterprises and associations declined steadily from 2000 to 2005, when enterprises filed 1,371 domestic patent applications. The decline halted in 2006, when slight growth was recorded, but in 2007 the number of applications fell again and totalled 1,349. In 2008, the number of applications began to show growth again and enterprises or associations filed 1,397 domestic patent applications. In 2008, the number of enterprises or associations having filed patent applications rose to 512 whereas in 2007 they numbered 467. Examined by industry, patenting increased in the manufacture of wood and wood products, and in the manufacture of metal, metal products and machinery. By contrast, in the manufacture of electrical and optical equipment the number of enterprises domestic patent applications fell clearly, from 226 in 2007 to 141 in 2008.</description>

<title>Research and development expenditure EUR 6.9 billion</title>

<description>Approximately EUR 6.9 billion was expended on research and development (RD) in Finland in 2008. Business enterprises accounted for EUR 5.1 billion, the higher education sector for just under EUR 1.2 billion and the rest of the public sector for nearly EUR 600 million of this. Good EUR 600 million more RD expenditure than in the previous year was recorded in statistics. The vast majority (94%) of the growth came from the business enterprise sector, but RD expenditure also rose somewhat in the other examined sectors. In 2009 RD expenditure is estimated to remain more or less on level with 2008.</description>

<title>Growth in exports of high technology to EU countries continued</title>

<description>In 2008 the value of Finlands exports abroad of high technology products amounted to EUR 11.5 billion. Exports were down by EUR 150 million from the year before. By contrast, imports decreased clearly more, by EUR 550 million, and stood at EUR 8.7 billion. The share of high technology products of all goods exports was 17.6 per cent and their share of goods imports was 13.9 per cent. The surplus of foreign trade in high technology products rose to a good EUR 2.8 billion.</description>

<title>Number of telecommunications subscriptions in Finland quadrupled in 20 years</title>

<description>In 1988 there were a total of nearly 2.6 million telephone subscriptions in Finland; fixed telephone network subscriptions numbered nearly 2.5 million and mobile phone subscriptions some 140,000. In the past two decades, communication has changed from location-specific use of telephones to a more varied kind of communication not bound to a certain location in which non-voice services and data transmission have an increasingly important role alongside voice services. At the end of 2008 there were already over 10 million telecommunications subscriptions in Finland; fixed telephone network subscriptions numbered close on 1.7 million, mobile phone subscriptions 6.9 million and broadband subscriptions nearly 2.1 million.</description>

<title>Changes in Internet Usage. Results from the 2008 Survey on ICT Usage</title>

<description>In spring 2008, 83 per cent of people between the ages of 16 and 74 in Finland said they had used the Internet during the three months prior to the survey. The share had gone up by four percentage points from the previous year. Internet is also used regularly and often. As many as 80 per cent of its users said they did it daily or almost daily. Only five per cent had used the Internet monthly or less often. The daily use largely also applies to elderly people. As many as 60 per cent of the people aged between 65 and 74 who had used the web in the past three months said that they were daily users. Daily use is also widespread among the whole population. In 2008, the share of daily Internet users was 66 per cent among the total population aged between 16 and 74.</description>
