Preliminary data on 2011 indicate that the number of students remained unchanged in comparison with the previous year. The number of students decreased in comprehensive school and upper secondary general school education, but increased in vocational and polytechnic education. No significant changes took place in university education. These data derive from the education statistics compiled by Statistics Finland.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, nearly all completers of the full upper secondary general school syllabus in 2011 had studied English, and Finnish or Swedish during their attendance of upper secondary general school. German had been studied by 25 per cent, French by 17 per cent, Spanish by 16 per cent and Russian by seven per cent of the completers of upper secondary general school education. The proportions of those having studied other foreign languages remained at four per cent or below. They also vary considerably between genders in several languages.</description>

Nine per cent of completers of the comprehensive school and 60 per cent of new passers of the matriculation examination failed to get a place for further studies. The share of those left outside further studies leading to a qualification or degree grew by around one-half of a percentage point from the previous year.</description>

Four decades earlier, their number was 3.4 times lower, or 882,000. By the end of 1970, one out of four and by the end of 2010 two out of three in the population aged 15 or over had attained a post-comprehensive level educational qualification.</description>

The number of pre-primary education pupils was 58,800, of whom 12,600 were in pre-primary education in schools and 46,200 in day care.</description>

The number of students attending education leading to a higher polytechnic degree was 7,300 in 2011, which is 800 students more than in 2010.</description>

The number of students was 10 per cent lower than in the previous year. Thirty-nine per cent of the students attended training for an initial vocational qualification, 33 per cent for a further vocational qualification and 28 per cent for a specialist vocational qualification. The shares of men and women among the students were almost equal. New students numbered 21 700. Of the students, 14 300 completed an entire qualification. Of the completed qualifications, 42 per cent were initial vocational qualifications, 32 per cent further vocational qualifications and 26 per cent specialist vocational qualifications. The shares of men and women among completers of a qualification were equal. These data have been collected from the organisers of apprenticeship training.</description>

The number of students was 2 per cent up on the previous year. Forty-eight per cent of the students attended training for an initial vocational qualification, 44 per cent for further vocational qualification and 8 per cent for a specialist vocational qualification. Fifty-four per cent of the students were women. New students numbered 43,700. Of the students, 18,900 completed an entire qualification. Of the completed qualifications, 43 per cent were initial vocationa qualifications, 49 per cent further vocational qualifications and 8 per cent specialist vocational qualifications. Sixty per cent of the qualifiers were women. These data have been collected from educational institutions. Apprenticeship training is not included in these data.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, English was the most commonly studied foreign language on grades 1 to 6 of comprehensive school in the autumn semester of 2010. Sixty-seven per cent of the pupils attending grades 1 to 6 studied English either as a compulsory or optional foreign language. The percentages of pupils studying other foreign languages remained at 5 per cent or below. A total of 345,615 pupils attended grades 1 to 6. 177 312 of the pupils were boys and 168 303 were girls. Nearly all pupils attending grades 7 to 9 studied both English and Swedish or Finnish either as mother tongue, or as a compulsory, optional or elective foreign language. German was studied by 11 per cent and French by 6 per cent of the pupils attending grades 7 to 9, mainly as an optional or elective foreign language. A total of 186,368 pupils attended grades 7 to 9. 95 175 of the pupils were boys and 91 193 were girls.</description>

Expenditure on comprehensive school education was EUR 4.0 billion in 2009. The next biggest proportions were university education and research, on which EUR 2.0 billion was expended, and vocational education on which EUR 1.5 billion was spent.</description>

Still more than one-half, or 55 per cent, of students were employed during their studies. The share of students employed during studies fell by 3.5 percentage points from the previous year. Employment during studies was most widespread among university students, as 60 per cent of them had an employment contract while studying. The share of students employed during studies was 57 per cent among polytechnic students and those in upper secondary vocational education.</description>
