Statistics Finland collects annually data from enterprises for the compilation of financial statements and structural statistics. The data are also used for national accounts and other economic statistics. The obligation to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004). The European Union's regulations also require the collection of the data in question. (Council Regulation No 295/2008 concerning structural business statistics and Regulation (EC) No concerning 2223/96 on the European system of national and regional accounts in the Community). Enterprises can transmit the data electronically using the TYVI service, or from February 2006 onwards also via the Internet on a web form.
The inquiry concerns all enterprises with more than 50 employees. Enterprises with between 10 and 50 employees have been selected into the inquiry with random sampling. The inquiry may also concern some enterprises with fewer employees. The inquiry also concerns all municipally-owned enterprises. In all, the inquiry comprises some 5,500 enterprises.
By law, the data collected for statistical purposes are to be kept confidential.
