The Finnish Travel Survey comprises two separate surveys. One is the monthly conducted Travel Survey inquiring about the numbers of trips and the characteristics of trips, and the other one is a so-called annual survey made once a year to establish the number of persons who have travelled during the year. The survey concerns domestic and outbound trips with overnight stays and same-day trips abroad.
The surveys are sample-based telephone inquiries. The interviews for the Travel Survey are carried out by Statistics Finland's telephone interview centre CATI together with the data collection for the Consumer Survey. The annual survey is made as an adjunct to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey in January to February of the year following the survey year. Statistics Finland's field interviewers carry out the interviews for the annual survey in different parts of Finland.Provision of data for the Finnish Travel Survey is voluntary (Statistics Act 280/2004).The sample persons represent the population aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland. The sample size of the annual survey is 2,150-2,400 persons.
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the provided data as confidential.
