The sales inquiry for manufacturing, construction and services requests information about monthly sales corresponding to the turnover data recorded in the profit and loss account.
According to the Council Regulation (EEC) No 1165/98 concerning short-term statistics, Statistics Finland is obliged to produce statistics describing short-term economic development, for example, on enterprises' turnover and wage bill. The sales inquiry covers around 2,000 major enterprises in each industry, from which turnover data are collected monthly. In addition, wage bill data are requested from around 30 enterprises divided into industry units, as such data are not available from any other sources. The inclusion criterion is the size of the enterprise's turnover relative to the turnover of the industry.
Enterprises' obligation to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004), which obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential. In the statistics published the data are given as industry-specific index figures.
As from August 2007, data on fixed assets had been requested in connection with the sales inquiry. Because it is conducted quarterly, the fixed assets inquiry, or investment inquiry, has been described as a separate inquiry in the register of data collections.
