Total output grew by 4.2 per cent in March
The volume of total output was 4.2 per cent greater in March 2001 than in March 2000. In February, output grew by 3.9 per cent from the previous year. The Monthly Indicator of Total Output of Statistics Finland indicates that, of the main branches of industry, the brisk growth of the economy was sustained by manufacturing in March.
Industrial output grew by 7 per cent in March. Calculated per working day, the manufacture of electrical products increased by 17 per cent, but the manufacture of the wood and paper industry contracted by 6 per cent.
Output in trade grew by 3 per cent from the previous year. Output in transport went up by 2 per cent. In agriculture and forestry output increased by 3 per cent despite the decrease in milk and meat production, because fellings were greater than in March last year. Output in other services and government services went up by nearly 3 per cent from March 2000. Construction fell by 3 per cent.
The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on twelve monthly series on different sectors of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting.
