The Finnish Ministry of Finance has launched a project to explore possibilities of further rationalisation of the national statistical service and decentralisation of functions of Statistics Finland.
Statistics Finland's official duties under the Ministry's decision include the preparation of necessary preliminary studies and the provision of expert assistance to the appointed investigators.
Statistics Finland regards the speculations presented in the media about the decentralisation of Statistics Finland's functions as premature. Statistics Finland points out that the investigation is only at its initial stage and believes that any decision that may eventually be taken will be based on thorough investigations while ensuring that preconditions for the agency's future functioning will be upheld.
