Challenge into the International Statistical Literacy Competition for school students

These are the kinds of questions that may come up in the International Statistical Literacy Competition aimed at school students aged 10 to 18 years. The competition is organised for the first time this year. Its objective is to improve students' abilities in describing their environment with the help of statistics and in using statistics as a tool for making sense of their daily life.

The best student from each participating school will participate the national phase of the competition, which will be organised in late 2008 or early 2009. The winners of the national competitions will go on to the international final competition, which will be organised in Durban, South Africa, during the meeting of the International Statistical Institute in 2009. So far educational institutions from 16 countries around the world have registered in the competition.

Participation in the competition is done through the teachers. The language of the competition is English or the language of the country in question. No costs are involved to the students or teachers who register or participate. Students of different ages will compete in their own categories.

The competition is organised by the International Association of Statistical Education (IASE), which promotes the teaching of statistics and statistical literacy, and operates under the auspices of the International Statistical Institute (ISI).

Students/classes interested in the competition can register through their teacher via email to Juana Sanches (Director of ISLP): jsanchez@stat.ucla.edu. If you register now, you should complete the first phase of the competition by the end of November.
