Finnish economic growth during the period 1860 to 2005 was driven by productivity increases resulting from the arrival of new general purpose technologies (GPTs), namely electricity and ICT. During the period, resource-based growth gave way to ICT-based growth with an emphasis on ICT production. However, the ongoing outsourcing of ICT production to low wage countries poses a challenge to the future productivity of the Finnish economy. Is it advancing towards a new reorganisation in the digital era?
In his study "Essays on Finnish Economic Growth and Productivity 1860-2005" published in Statistics Finland's Research Reports series (No. 248), Jukka Jalava looks at the impact of ICT on economic growth and productivity, compares the contributions of electricity and ICT to Finnish GDP growth, and offers an empirical resolution to the Artto-Pohjola paradox.
Statistics Finland's Research Reports series describes Finnish society in the light of up-to-date results of studies carried out at Statistics Finland or based on its datasets.
