Ms Heli Jeskanen-Sundström, Director General of Statistics Finland, was elected on 13 June 2007 as Chairperson of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) and its Bureau which operate under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Ms Jeskanen-Sundström's term will run for the two years to June 2009. She follows in the task Ms Katherine Wallman from the United States of America.
The ECE is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. Its members include European states, the United States of America and Canada. The Conference of European Statisticians is a co-operative organ of the UNECE in the field of statistics. At the moment nearly 60 countries and international organisations participate in its work. The main objectives of the CES include improvement of international comparability of national statistics and promotion of co-ordination of statistical activities in Europe of international organisations. To achieve its objectives it holds an annual conference, and organises working group meetings and seminars.
The work of the CES is steered by a Bureau which meets twice a year. At the same time as Ms Jeskanen-Sundström was elected as its Chairperson, the heads of the national statistical offices of Australia, Brazil, Austria, Latvia, Germany, the Russian Federation and the United States of America were elected as its Vice-chairpersons. The Statistical Division of the UNECE, whose other functions include maintenance of a Database on International Statistical Activities, acts as the Secretariat of the CES and its Bureau.
