According to a benchmarking study conducted jointly by the national statistical offices of Sweden and Finland - Statistics Finland and Statistics Sweden - the Swedish and Finnish statistical systems have many similarities, but also some clear differences.
In both Finland and Sweden, activity in the field of statistics and statistics production are typified by respect for the norms and guidelines of statistical ethics, and strict quality criteria. Both countries give high priority to disclosure control, information security and equal treatment of data users. Systematic efforts are made to review statistical production systems and improve their efficiency. In terms of the number and topics of produced statistics the countries are quite alike.

The aims in the benchmarking were to enable learning from each other and exchange best practices between the countries. It covered both the working approach in general and a few practical cases of statistics in detail. The comparison proved useful, even though difficult in places due to differences between the two countries in administrative and financing patterns and task organisation.
The two statistical authorities will continue their co-operation, both in individual statistics and in other activities with a broader scope. Sweden's experiences in the productionisation and dissemination of statistical data are of particular interest to Finland.
